Sumner County schools report delays, damage at athletic facilities; press box en route from Texas

District staff updated the Sumner County Education Committee on March 17 about athletic-facility work and Several school construction projects, noting site issues and staggered schedules.

Porter, director of schools, said the stadium field had been “totally uprooted” and the track’s integrity was a concern, calling the athletic project “probably the tightest” because crews are working on both field and track. He said the district hopes the work will be finished before the first home football game.

Porter described construction timelines at several schools. He said progress can look slow during early stages but can accelerate when steel is set. “Fort Worth's almost done. The press box is sitting in Texas. It will be shipped up here, and they'll set it hopefully in the next few weeks,” he said.

Porter said bids are coming in for North Sumner and he anticipated the school board would approve an adjusted budget tied to that project. He called the North Sumner work “a great improvement for North Sumner Elementary.”

Porter referenced visits and materials on other sites and said Dr. Lindbergh sent photos and an update that staff will add to supplemental meeting materials on the district website.

Committee members asked clarifying questions about staging and material locations; staff answered that materials were staged at a factory parking lot and that work at some sites had paused and would resume as schedules align.

No formal construction contracts or change orders were voted on at the committee meeting; staff reported progress and said formal approvals will follow normal procurement and board processes.
