City shifts dog impound services to Baker Veterinary Hospital on trial basis; owners to pay impound fees

Baker City — City staff told the council they are piloting an arrangement with Baker Veterinary Hospital to handle dog impounds after the prior clinic arrangement ended. Staff said the new impound fees will be $35 per day for standard impounds and $50 per day if the dog is deemed dangerous; these daily impound fees will be charged to dog owners in addition to city fees.
Under the trial, staff proposed allowing owners to complete paperwork and pay at the veterinary clinic at pickup — rather than having to go to City Hall first and then return to the clinic — to reduce stress for owners and animals and to ease veterinary staff workload. Staff said they must check legal and payment card requirements before permitting clinics to accept city fees at point of pickup.
Staff reported positive early feedback from the veterinary clinic since the agreement began and said the arrangement will be evaluated after one to two months of trial operations and adjusted as needed.
