Council adopts 2024 ICC building codes updates on second reading with correction

The Riverton City Council advanced Ordinance 25-003 on second reading to adopt the 2024 International Building Codes (IBC) and related code texts after staff corrected a scrivener’s error noted at first reading.
City staff reported the State of Wyoming adopted the 2024 International Building Codes late last calendar year and municipal adoption is required within six months to preserve local authority over inspections and plan review under Wyo. Stat. § 35-9-121. The city’s Board of Appeals (a seven-member board of local contractors and tradespeople) reviewed the codes and on February 10 recommended adoption; staff pointed out a scrivener’s error on a deletion line referencing section R313 (automatic residential fire sprinkler systems for townhouses). The corrected ordinance restores the intended language clarifying R313’s requirements and exceptions.
Councilmembers expressed frustration at the state’s timetable but said local modifications that make sense will remain in place. The council voted in favor on second reading after confirming the correction; the motion passed with a voice vote.
