Parent urges board to create middle school swim team to sustain high school program

White told the board that the high school swim program accepts and trains students who do not know how to swim, but without a middle‑school feeder program that pipeline is limited. She said the local YMCA team disbanded more than a decade ago and that the high school program has produced state‑level divers in recent years. White argued a middle school team — possibly starting as a club year one — would offer winter athletics for students who did not participate earlier and provide long‑term physical and mental‑health benefits.
Board members asked staff to check feasibility. One board member noted possible constraints on pool time and state rules that may require separate lanes for middle‑ and high‑school practice. A board member said they would “double check with Justin” on pool availability and noted that starting a team as a club is a common first step. The board did not take a formal vote on the request and directed staff to investigate and report back to the board.
