The Mount Vernon City Schools Board of Education unanimously adopted Resolution 26205 in March 2025 commending student wrestlers Ashlyn Brokaw and Alex Taylor for winning Ohio High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships.
The resolution, read into the record and entered into the board minutes, praises the students’ “dedication, skill and perseverance” and extends recognition to other state placers and qualifiers and to the coaching staff identified in the resolution. The document names head coaches Corey Firebaugh and Jay DePolo and assistant coaches Matt Lybarger and Bob Kennedy for their roles in developing the program.
The resolution text included a list of other state competitors from Mount Vernon cited by the board: Jake Taylor (sixth place at 65 pounds), Caleb Snyder (106), Maverick Gregory (157) and Luke Mullins (190), and noted three state qualifiers in addition to the champions. The resolution directs that certificates of recognition be provided to the two state champions, their coaches and their families and that the resolution be entered into the official minutes. School and board representatives stood to present the students and the board recessed briefly so attendees could meet the athletes.
Board members and coaches praised the wrestlers’ and the program’s work ethic. The board voted to adopt the resolution; copies will be distributed to the athletes and coaching staff.
