Westonka recognizes state wrestling champion Cooper Rowe; student senate outlines spring activities

The Westonka Public School District celebrated student achievements and heard a student-government update at its March regular meeting.
Mr. Peterson invited Cooper Rowe to the podium to recognize his repeat state wrestling title at 160 pounds. "He's methodical and he just takes care of business," Mr. Peterson said before introducing Cooper. Cooper described his matches at the state tournament: "My first match I beat the kid in like 37 seconds... Second match I beat the kid in the second period like 18 to 0... I wrestled the finals. I beat [him] 8-2," Cooper said. The presenter noted changes to scoring this year and described the state tournament logistics at the Xcel Energy Center.
The board and meeting attendees also heard a Student Senate report from Mason. Mason outlined current and upcoming student activities, including the Stuff the Bus food drive (pickup Friday; students can donate at lunch or online and enter prize drawings), a blood drive April 2, DECA’s recent state competition and expected qualifiers for the International Career Development Conference, prom planning with a location revealed as Gale Woods around May 3, and a Unified Club event that paired special-education and general-education students on Valentine’s Day. Athletics highlights included multiple individual qualifiers for state wrestling and season records for basketball and hockey teams; the robotics team competed in Duluth, recovered from an in-competition failure and qualified to advance to Worlds.
Administrators and family members commended students’ persistence and community support. The board thanked Cooper and the students for their accomplishments and wished the teams luck at future competitions.
