Pelham City Schools highlights student achievements, CTE competition wins

At the March 17 Pelham City Schools board meeting, Communications Director Nicola Knight reported a string of student recognitions and Career and Technical Education competition results, including culinary teams qualifying for nationals and media teams advancing to state competition.
Nicola Knight, Pelham City Schools communications director, told the school board on March 17 that multiple Pelham students and teams earned local, state and national recognition this spring.
“...we've already filled up our Panther Pride for this month. So I'm excited to share lots of accomplishments and great things happening with our students,” Knight said, listing wins across career and technical education (CTE), athletics, band, choir and visual arts.
Knight said Pelham Oaks and Pelham Ridge participated in the E3 (Engaging Elementary Engineers) competition hosted by Shelby County Schools; Pelham Ridge earned a second-place finish in one challenge and received a flag recognition. At Pelham High School, the television production class and yearbook entries received several awards at the Alabama Scholastic Press Association convention at the University of Alabama; two broadcast teams qualified for the state competition in Mobile.
The culinary program won multiple competitions: the Pelham High School culinary team placed first at the Alabama ProStart Invitational, which qualified them for nationals in Baltimore in May; individual students also qualified for state competitions after placing in county contests. Knight noted SkillsUSA participation and upcoming national events as signs of the program’s strength.
Knight also reported athletic and arts recognitions: a Pelham track athlete qualified for the New Balance Nationals indoor meet in Boston; middle- and high-school band and choir students received superior ratings at state assessments; and Pelham High School students Anthony Flores and Anaya Chapique placed in the Visual Arts Achievement Program.
Board President Ford interjected after Knight’s report, saying, “That's a lot,” reflecting the breadth of awards the district announced. Vice President Robert Plummer and other board members offered brief congratulatory remarks.
District leaders said these recognitions reflect continued emphasis on CTE and extracurricular programs. Knight closed her list of recognitions before the meeting moved on to personnel and policy items.
The board did not take any vote related to the student recognitions; the report was presented as an informational item.
