Commissioners discussed logistics and volunteer assignments for Island Fest and several summer events during the meeting, and staff said the department is restoring a traditional fireworks display this year at an estimated cost of $20,000.
Dates and events Staff and commissioners identified Island Fest dates as May 30—June 1, and said the department will return to fireworks this year after a one-time drone show last year. "This year, we're going back to fireworks, so it's gonna be costing $20,000," Zaid said in the budget presentation.
Volunteer roles and planning Commission leadership assigned a planning group for Island Fest that will include Kevin, Stacy, Jamieson and likely Wendy; organizers said the group will clarify responsibilities (logistics, VIP area, beverage tent) and that the meeting is administrative, not a decision-making quorum. Kevin Naso said the beverage tent team is forming and volunteers are still needed.
Concert series and other summer programming Commissioners confirmed a summer concert series at Water—s Edge and Tipsy Fish beginning Thursday, June 19 and running weekly through Aug. 8, with 10 bands scheduled. Staff said concert nights are free and expected to draw increased attendance.
Budget note Commissioners were also told that Island Fest budget lines include concessions, carnival rides and an exhibitor fee structure; promotion costs rose slightly to account for higher publishing costs.
Ending Commission staff asked commissioners to attend a planning meeting and to provide volunteers; staff will circulate assignments and a logistics checklist ahead of the festival.
