Senate committee OKs funding request for new faculty positions at John A. Burns School of Medicine

The Senate Committee on Higher Education on March 18 voted to pass House Bill 718 HD1, a measure that would appropriate funds for new faculty positions and an environmental health and safety officer at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM).
Supporters told the committee the hires would expand teaching capacity and biomedical research. "They will be teaching medical students as well as doing biomedical [research]," Samuel Shoemaker said when asked whether the positions would increase the medical school class size.
Committee members discussed whether the positions were new or additions to prior requests; Shoemaker confirmed the positions were new. Shoemaker said the school aims to increase the entering class from 77 toward a target of 80 students and noted the institution is preparing a physician workforce position paper the committee requested.
The committee recorded the recommendation to pass the bill as is. Chair Kim and Vice Chair Kidani both voted aye; Senator Hashimoto and Senator Fevella also voted aye; Senator Fukunaga was excused.
The bill advances to Ways and Means with its effective date and appropriation amounts left blank in the draft that the committee considered.
