Grand Rapids rolls out permit-ready housing plans, launches emerging developer training

The City of Grand Rapids introduced permit-ready residential plan sets and a linked emerging-developer training program aimed at lowering barriers to small-scale infill housing.
Planning Director Kristen Turkelson said the city has soft-launched a library of construction-ready plans — three single-family models, three duplex designs and two fourplex layouts — that staff say have undergone extensive code review and can move more quickly into permitting and construction. "We took this concept and made it specific to the city of Grand Rapids," Turkelson said.
The program is connected to an emerging-developer cohort led in partnership with local organizations. A presenter representing the Urban League and partner organizations described a 12-week curriculum with ongoing mentorship and financing support.
