Council members report on regional planning, workforce funding and airport projects
Summary
Council members gave brief updates on Tri-County Regional Planning Commission topics, Capital Area Michigan Works funding projections and airport design and operations, including a design grant and new EV chargers at the airport short-term lot.
Several council members offered short reports on outside boards and commissions during the March 10 Committee of the Whole.
Councilmember Pelle Vanoglu reported on the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission meeting (Feb. 26), noting transportation program reports, CATA and MDOT targets, the 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan and preliminary discussion of the FY 2026–29 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Vanoglu said she would follow up with any additional materials for council.
Vanoglu and Vice President Carter also described a special Capital Area Michigan Works (CAMW) meeting about 2025 funding and an upcoming Request for Proposals for workforce services starting July 1, 2025. CAMW staff warned that, based on current federal funding projections, full-time services in St. Johns and Charlotte may not continue in their current form after July 1; the Lansing American Job Center’s hours were not expected to change, staff said.
Councilmember Spadafore provided an airport update: an owner’s representative was selected after an RFQ for terminal renovation-design services tied to an $8.1 million design grant; two EV chargers (four parking spots total) were installed in the short-term parking lot and are on the Blink network; and winter-weather operations have required extended runway/maintenance staffing during a heavier-than-average snowfall period, affecting some operations.
Councilmember Brown asked whether the Tri-County planning body had followed up on previous housing and mobility work along Michigan Avenue; Vanoglu said she would request additional information and share findings with council.
These updates were informational reports; no council action was required or taken on these items at the March 10 meeting.
