Commission approves $233,543 contract for security systems at new Kentwood community center

The Kentwood City Commission on March 4 authorized entering into an agreement with Secure Alarm LLC for security system materials, installation and monitoring services for the new community center at a cost not to exceed $233,543, which includes a 10% contingency.
Susan, a Parks and Recreation staff member, said the design includes interior and exterior video cameras, parking-lot coverage, access control to restrict parts of the building, intrusion detection on exterior doors and two intercom systems (one at the garage for deliveries and one at a catering door). Susan said the system is intended to reduce staff time spent escorting vendors and to limit hard-key distribution by using access control histories.
Susan said Secure Alarm is the city's standard vendor for security and has provided monitoring services to the city for several years; staff recommended the award under the city’s special circumstances exemption because of the vendor’s familiarity with the city’s systems. She noted that ongoing monitoring fees were not included in the quote and would be addressed later as an amendment to Secure Alarm’s existing contract when the building opens.
Commissioner Arts asked whether the intercom includes a camera; Susan confirmed it would. Commissioner Moore moved approval; Commissioner Arts seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote.
