Kentwood approves one-year sidewalk snow-plow contract with option to renew

Chad, a city staff member, told the commission the contract covers more than 50 sidewalks selected by a matrix that weighs residential density, bus routes, schools and shopping centers. Staff recommended the lowest bidder, JND (listed in the record as JND/JND variant), based on favorable references and municipal experience. The authorization includes an option to extend the contract up to five years, subject to future funding and satisfactory performance.
Commissioner Morgan asked about the contractor's expected turnaround time after snowfall. Chad said the city requires sidewalks to be cleared within 24 hours following a qualifying event of two inches or more. He added that prolonged multi-day snow events can make strict adherence impractical and asked residents to report missed sidewalks to the public works department so staff can follow up with the contractor. Chad also reminded the commission that, under a city ordinance referenced in the meeting, property owners remain responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of their properties.
The commission approved the contract by voice vote. Staff indicated the work will be funded from the Major Streets operating fund and that the contractor maintains municipal contracts in neighboring jurisdictions.
