A group of fourth-graders from Seippelt Elementary presented to the Milford board on March 18 about Project Sea Turtle, a student-led campaign to raise money and awareness for seaturtles.org.
The class described curriculum ties to the school's December character trait, generosity, and a series of classroom activities including research, posters, flyers and announcements. Student Nathan Bischoff told the board the idea began after students watched a video about children collecting recyclables to raise funds for a humanitarian cause; the class chose sea turtles as their focus.
Emerson Dillingham summarized research the class conducted on threats to sea turtles, citing pollution, plastic bags and the effects of light pollution and climate change on nesting beaches. Student Lily Walt reported a running total: “So far, we raised $434.34,” and noted one classmate contributed $100 of their own money.
Principal Melissa Caraher introduced the students and said Friday assemblies and teacher support made the project possible. Teacher Lindsey Shiflett and Lauren Iger, teacher on assignment who organizes assemblies, were acknowledged for their roles.
Why it matters: The presentation highlighted student civic learning and community engagement at the elementary level, and the board thanked the students for their public speaking. The students said they will donate funds to seaturtles.org and hoped their project would inspire others.
No formal board action was required on the presentation.
