Tourism office wins $30,000 Trail Town grant; parks schedule pop-up services, events

Tourism and parks staff told McCreary County Fiscal Court on March 13 that Stearns was awarded a $30,000 Trail Town grant to support signage, benches, brochures and trail repairs.
Michelle (tourism) said she applied for the grant in November and the governor’s office announced Stearns as one of 19 awardees. The grant will fund welcome and wayfinding signage, visitor information updates and minor repairs; two local volunteer groups will support upkeep of community spaces.
County parks staff reported a lineup of spring events and services: a pop-up driver’s license/Real ID event scheduled in the gym (Drive.KY.gov; attendees may walk in if appointments are unavailable), a diabetes-awareness walk, a volunteer day at McCreary Park, the county fairboard’s Easter community event, and the county’s Blue Heron 10K — a race the parks office said had been approved by the National Park Service and already had nearly 20 signups.
Parks Director Melissa provided times and contact numbers for registration and noted campground and facility rental totals for February. Tourism Director Michelle also encouraged following the county tourism page for updates and said the chamber is accepting applications for a $500 scholarship.
Court members welcomed the grant news and did not take a formal vote on tourism items at the meeting. Staff said the Trail Town award and volunteer partnerships are expected to reduce maintenance costs while improving the visitor experience.
