Newton County Commissioners approved bill pay to purchase a used pursuit vehicle for the sheriff’s office, described in the meeting as a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado with about 31,000 miles.
The sheriff’s office presented a single available vehicle from a local vendor that had been refurbished for law enforcement use. The vendor’s stated price during discussion was $32,004.08 for the vehicle; county staff told the court the sheriff’s vehicle fund had sufficient funds to cover the purchase. Commissioners noted it can be difficult to find direct comparables for used specialized pursuit packages and that the purchase avoided additional procurement costs or repeated travel.
The bill-pay approval was made by motion and carried on a voice vote. Court members said the captain and chief deputy would inspect the vehicle before the county would finalize the check; if the vehicle did not meet expectations the check would be returned and the purchase halted.
In discussion the court emphasized transparency in procurement of used equipment and the desire to avoid unnecessary trips and expense for taxpayers by allowing on-the-spot payment if inspection went well.
