Court accepts dedication of Cemetery Road into Newton County road system

Newton County Commissioners Court on March 11 accepted dedications of a private lane known locally as Cemetery Road into the county road system and directed the county to add the roadway to its map for maintenance.
County staff said two landowners along the lane filed written dedications conveying a public interest in the right of way; the dedications allow the county to accept the road under Chapter 281 of the Texas Transportation Code. Staff described the stretch the court will assume as roughly 450 feet past the cemetery; planned initial maintenance includes installing a 12-inch culvert, adding rock and grading at an estimated cost of $2,500–$3,000.
Commissioners said the road serves residents of Devil Pocket, Nichols Creek and Shepherd Settlement communities and would improve access for funerary vehicles and property access. Commissioner White moved to accept the dedication; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
