Personnel committee reclassifies electromechanical technician roles and advances amended pay ordinance for reconsideration

The Newark Personnel Committee on March 17 approved Ordinance 25-12 to align and reclassify water and wastewater electromechanical technician job titles to create a common classification (water electromechanical technician operator and wastewater electromechanical technician operator). Committee members said the change builds staffing depth and is a net zero-sum change to authorization tables.
Separately the committee took Ordinance 24-39 off the table and approved an amendment clarifying that the pay change for the senior automotive mechanic/equipment operator is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025, and that the position had been erroneously excluded from prior contract negotiations; the amendment states the position remains subject to bargaining in the upcoming AFSCME contract negotiations. Committee members discussed proper procedure for amending an item that had been tabled and confirmed the amendment will be reconsidered at full council.
Both actions passed the committee by voice votes recorded as 5–0.
