The Metropolitan Council Budget & Finance Committee voted 10-0 on May 20 to appropriate $59,300,000 in connection with the Choose How You Move transportation improvement grant. The appropriation covers accounts for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure, Information Technology Services, and the mayor’s office.
Amanda Deaton Moyer of the Department of Finance clarified that the figure is an estimate of collections from a half‑penny sales tax that voters approved in November and that collections began in February. "We are collecting those taxes right this very moment," Deaton Moyer said, adding that because the tax was approved after the fiscal 2025 budget adoption, the city cannot spend those dollars until they are allocated and remitted; the department expects remittances in April.
Vice Chair Toombs asked whether the funds are already in hand or only anticipated; Deaton Moyer confirmed the appropriation is an estimate for fiscal 2025 collections and that if actual collections are lower the allocation would be reduced accordingly. The committee approved the appropriation as presented by unanimous voice vote.
The Department of Finance characterized the appropriation as a budgeted estimate consistent with normal appropriation practice; final amounts will depend on the actual tax receipts.
