Commissioners approve four budget amendments; open FY26 opioid grant application processes and plan county-run peer-support program

Wayne County commissioners approved four budget amendments and authorized staff to open application and request-for-proposal processes for opioid funds during the March 18 meeting.
The four budget amendments recorded in the board packet were: - Amendment #261 (Services on Aging): allocate Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) grant funds received for the program listed in the packet. - Amendment #264 (Library): accept a $900 award from UNC for programming supplies tied to a state library initiative named in the packet. - Amendment #273 (Sheriff's Office): record receipt of controlled-substance tax revenue from the North Carolina Department of Revenue in the amount of $93.40. - Amendment #276 (Detention Center): transfer funds internally to cover an anticipated shortfall in central prison shared expense safekeeping line items in the amount of $20,600, moving funds from professional services (legal) and janitorial lines.
Separately, the board approved two agenda items to begin use of opioid-related funding for FY26: staff will (1) open the request-for-applications process for grant funding and (2) open an RFP process to establish county-sponsored peer-support programming. Staff said the peer-support program would be county-sponsored and funded through opioid allotments; the board approved beginning the competitive processes to solicit providers and proposals.
No objections were raised during the meeting on these items, and they were rolled into the consent agenda for approval.
