Committee recommends design contract for new salt storage at 9911 Gregory Road

MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. — The village Public Improvement and Safety Committee on its March meeting voted to recommend approval of Resolution 19 R25, a professional services agreement to design a new salt storage facility at 9911 Gregory Road.
Public works staff told the committee the proposed reinforced-concrete building would be capable of holding about 6,500 tons of salt — roughly a one-year supply for the village — and that construction is targeted to begin in mid-July, with a contract award expected in June and substantial completion aimed for September. "The building was built in 2020, so now we're we're getting around to getting the salt storage facility put together," a public works staff member said during the presentation.
The committee's recommendation follows preliminary planning and site visits, the staff member said. "Mitch and I have done a lot of preliminary planning. We actually went and visited quite a few facilities to get an idea of what we wanted," the staff member said, describing the village's intent to consolidate public works operations and avoid stagnant material by enabling salt turnover inside an enclosed facility.
Improvements outlined by staff include the storage building itself, site work, lighting, landscaping and stormwater management. Village documents and the presentation state the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) will fund the project; staff said the village budgeted for the work in both the prior fiscal year and the current fiscal year.
Staff also described plans to decommission and demolish the existing salt facility after it is emptied following the next winter season, rather than trucking its contents to the new site. "We're still kinda talking through that, but I think, at the end of the day, I think we're going to use that facility for the next winter, get everything out of it, and then take it down," the staff member said.
Trustee Stromberg moved to approve the resolution; Trustee Nelson seconded. With no discussion, the committee chair called for the voice vote. The chair announced the motion carried, and the resolution will move to the April 9 village board meeting with a positive recommendation.
The measure carries local implications for public works operations and winter road maintenance logistics; no construction contract award was made at the committee level, and committee approval simply forwards the design-phase agreement to the full board for final action.
