Superintendent Barr honored and district recognized in national literacy/early-learning initiative

During the March 18 board meeting Superintendent Barr and district staff highlighted recent recognitions and partnerships that reflect the district’s early-learning and literacy work.
Superintendent Barr was identified in the meeting as the Gig Harbor Chamber’s 2025 Citizen of the Year; board members and community representatives noted letters of support from local partners. District staff said the district also submitted materials to AASA (the national superintendents’ association) and has been named a demonstration or “district to watch” for elements of its early-learning and literacy work such as place-based transitional kindergarten and STEM lighthouse designations. Presenters credited community partnerships, grant work and multi-year implementation for the recognition.
Board members and staff used the superintendent’s report to highlight other district activities: kindergarten registration is open; the district hosted a well-attended Aviation Academy evening to preview an aviation pathway; and elementary conferences and other events are upcoming. No formal action or funding changes were announced in connection with the recognitions at the meeting.
