Board approves placement agreement for aboveground diesel tank at treatment plant

The Board of Public Works and Safety approved an agreement on March 18 permitting a local supplier to place an aboveground diesel tank at the city wastewater treatment plant, allowing staff to retire two underground tanks that no longer meet current standards.
Jerry Jackson, Wastewater, told the board the arrangement would allow the department to supply diesel for the plant generator and avoid continuing use of 35-year-old underground tanks that fail modern inspection standards. Jackson described the contract as a $0 agreement unless the city chooses to buy the tank; he said his intent was not to purchase the tank because the department plans to transition to a natural-gas generator in the future. The quoted purchase price if the city elected to buy the tank was $7,380.
Jackson said the aboveground tank would be plumbed to the generator and would include level sensors; installation labor for piping and electronics would be performed in house. He said the setup also allows the department to fuel city trucks from the tank so fuel can be cycled and remain fresh during prolonged outages.
The motion to approve giving Wastewater authority to sign the placement agreement with the local supplier passed by voice vote. Jackson said he will return to the board soon with quotes to remove the old underground tanks and noted the department must comply with state inspection standards going forward.
The board did not approve any purchase of the tank at this meeting; Jackson said any purchase would be presented separately. The approval covers the placement agreement only and authorizes staff to proceed with installation steps necessary to operate the generator from the new tank.
