Vigo County officials said they have received two bids to demolish the former Otter Creek School on Park Avenue and will take the proposals under advisement, with plans to act at a future meeting once abatement and safety clearances are confirmed.
Terry Bays, the county building inspector, said the county sent invitations to five contractors who had previously bid on similar housing properties; two submitted bids. “We received 2 of the 5 that looked at it,” Bays said. County staff reported the two bids as: Excavating LLC for $84,900 and S and G Excavating Incorporated for $75,000.
Bays told commissioners the property remains unsecured and is a public-safety concern. She described the planned work as demolition and trucking; the county will handle landfill costs and contractors will need to coordinate abatement work because the structure is unsafe to enter. She said the county has been in contact with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and that an abatement inspection will occur after the site is deemed safe.
A county official said the Otter Creek Fire Department recently informed the county it is unsafe for firefighters to enter the structure and would control any fire rather than enter the building. Commissioners concluded by taking the bids “under advisement” and indicated they expected to act on the item at next week’s meeting.
Ending: Staff asked any organization that wishes to save historic markers from the building to contact the county so items can be preserved.
