Committee extends Washington Avenue parking-overlay sunset for five years to 2027

The Land Use and Sustainability Committee on June 6 endorsed a five-year extension to the sunset provision for Parking District No. 7 (a Washington Avenue parking overlay) that would move the current expiration from September 2025 to Sept. 1, 2027.
Tom (staff) told the committee the overlay, adopted in 2015 with a five-year sunset, has supported several Washington Avenue projects, including recent hotel approvals. A sponsor representative said one mixed-use project that relies on overlay provisions will not likely have a building permit before the current sunset date; the sponsor asked for a five-year extension to preserve the project's ability to use the overlay. Staff said the administration supports the extension and recommended the committee endorse the change.
A committee member moved the extension and it was seconded; the committee recommended the extension for Planning Board and commission consideration and concluded the item in committee that day.
