McBrayer Elementary students described a project-based learning effort that included a proposal for a Gaga ball pit, a student technology leadership project that collected toys for families, and plans for a Little Free Library.
Students said they identified a lack of play options for older elementary students and surveyed third- through fifth-graders about interest in a Gaga ball pit. “We had identified a problem, not enough things for older students to do, and thought of a way to solve it,” said student Carter Stafford. Students said they practiced persuasive and technical writing as part of the project and presented proposals to their PTO.
The class also presented STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) work. Kennedy Page, McBrayer’s STLP coach, said the team’s Joy in Every Toy drive collected new and gently used toys and partnered with the school’s family resource center to distribute donations to families in need. “Through Joy in Every Toy, we learned how to be innovative designers, creative partners and global helpers while helping our community,” Page said. The STLP team also advanced to the state competition in April.
Looking ahead, the students and STLP coach proposed a Little Free Library to promote summer reading. Librarian Emily Stevens (mentioned by the STLP presentation) was noted as collaborating on the plan; students said the library would operate as a “take a book, leave a book” resource available 24/7.
Students described steps already taken: surveying peers, interviewing an “expert panel” at another elementary school about an existing Gaga pit, measuring potential placements on the playground, and preparing cost estimates. One student said an estimate for the Gaga pit materials was about $4,900, and students described discussing different surfacing options including wood chips and turf.
The presentation included student-made maps, interviews, songs and videos created as part of the project. Board members thanked the students and invited them to remain for the rest of the meeting.
The school presentation was given during the public portion of the Rowan County Board of Education special call meeting on March 17, 2025.
