MPS to establish independent audit committee to strengthen audit oversight

The Long-Range Planning Committee voted to establish a Milwaukee Public Schools Audit Committee to provide an additional governance layer for the district’s audit function and to facilitate independent reporting by the chief auditor.
Matt Chase of the Office of Accountability and Efficiency described the committee as a best practice that would allow the chief auditor to report functionally to a dedicated audit committee, provide expert advice, and improve follow-up visibility on audit recommendations. Chase said the proposed charter drew on practices from other school and municipal audit committees and helps meet corrective action plan requirements with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Public speaker Quintin Clabon supported formation of the committee and urged frequent public updates to the corrective action plan, noting upcoming reporting deadlines. Director Herndon moved to accept the administration’s recommendation to establish the audit committee; the committee recorded a unanimous 5-0 roll call and the motion passed.
The proposed committee charter described a five-member voting membership (as presented in the packet) and direct functional reporting by the chief auditor. The committee is intended to increase arm’s-length oversight and to improve recognition and follow-up on audit findings by the board and administration.
