During the March 17 workshop staff presented a proposed sale of four Tomball police vehicles to the Montgomery Independent School District for $3,000 each.
A staff presenter said the fleet vehicles have high mileage and that the city typically retires cars at this mileage because replacement cost and reliability make continued operation impractical. The presenter said auctioning the vehicles could yield $5,000–$5,500 each but that preparing vehicles for auction (removing lights and emergency equipment and shop stripping) typically costs $1,000–$1,500 per vehicle, reducing net proceeds. Staff said Montgomery ISD had expressed interest and that the school district has a shortage of police vehicles.
Staff cited Chapter 791 of the Texas Local Government Code as a statutory basis for working with other agencies on disposition of excess property. Council discussion included prior-year practice (the city sold vehicles to Montgomery ISD last year) and confirmation that the proposed $3,000 price reflected prior arrangements and that Montgomery ISD would wrap and repurpose the vehicles for district use.
