District 200 highlights Challenger Center missions, expands summer camps; site running nearly 300 missions this school year

She told the board that about 17 runs of the new missions had occurred so far this school year and that the site is approaching 300 missions run during the school year. Sullivan said the Challenger program is national and that the local site often runs more missions than other sites, including operating up to two site missions per day.
On summer programming, Sullivan said the district expanded offerings to 12 different summer camps, with activities ranging from single-day mission camps to multi-day astronaut training; registration was reported as open. She also noted the district brings first-grade students to some programs and that this year there were about 18 first-grade sections in the program.
Board members asked a question about the frequency of missions during the school year and whether additional summertime mission options were available beyond the district's program; Sullivan said weekend and troop groups (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts) sometimes schedule missions and additional days can be added if staffing allows.
The presentation included a request for continued support for program growth and teacher familiarization opportunities so new teachers could observe mission activities during select school days. No formal board action was recorded on the presentation during the meeting.
