A Roosevelt resident urged the City Council to relax restrictions on short-term rentals such as Airbnb during the public-comment portion of the meeting, citing visitor traffic and local events as reasons to allow more listings in residential areas.
The speaker, identified as Preston, told the council he had counted seven homes currently hosting short-term rentals in Roosevelt and suggested increasing allowable units "up to 20" and loosening placement restrictions. "I just noticed out how much Airbnb traffic we have in Roosevelt," he said. "...it'd be good to have that up to 20, something like that." He recommended the city re-evaluate limits and zoning restrictions as the community develops recreational attractions.
Council members said the city had adopted a state-required short-term rental policy and zoning restrictions and that staff would consider revisiting placement or caps at a later date. "We put it in because we were required by the state to have [a policy], and so we put it in. But we definitely can look at some of those things," Councilman White said. Council did not take any action at the meeting.
The council and staff noted short-term rentals are permitted in some commercial and mixed-use zones. The council asked staff to keep the topic for future discussion rather than making immediate changes.
