Shorewood to proceed with planned Safe Streets speed table; county funding extra allocation uncertain

Shorewood staff told trustees that a $70,000 pool of unallocated Safe Streets for All grant funds countywide might be available for additional demonstration activities, but that using the money could require a federal amendment and delay local installations.

Public Works staff had requested direction on whether to seek the extra funds to install a second speed table on the Morris/Menlo cut‑through. The additional installation was estimated at about $15,000 installed, and staff estimated the village’s match could be approximately $3,000 if the county reallocated funds to the village. Staff later said an expedited federal amendment might not be possible and pursuing the county funds could push the second installation to fall or next spring.

Trustees decided to proceed with the work currently scoped and not delay installation while officials pursue the larger fund reallocation. Strand, the village engineer, will proceed with the analysis and installation schedule for the originally planned demonstration activity; staff said the vendor estimated three to five weeks for installation once scheduled. If county or federal amendments become practical later, staff may return to the board with a request for the second table or another demonstration activity.
