West Warwick library urges modest budget increase, highlights community services

The West Warwick Public Library director told the Town Council March 17 that the library's fiscal 2026 request represents less than 1% of the town's overall budget and emphasized the library's role as a community hub.
The director (unnamed in the transcript) described the library's services beyond book lending: an all‑abilities exercise class, an AARP tax preparation partnership, a record 1,400 free lunches served to children and teens last summer, a food and personal‑care pantry and partnerships with FeedRI and other social‑service organizations. "We might be regarded as the hub, the West Warwick community," the director said.
The director said the FY26 request includes an incremental salary increase for staff to move toward median pay levels among comparable Rhode Island public libraries and to accommodate a mandated minimum wage increase that takes effect January 1, 2026. The director said the increases are intended to retain and recruit staff who deliver a broad suite of programs and services.
Council members had no substantive questions during the presentation and thanked the director for the library's programming. The matter will move forward as part of the broader budget process and any final funding decisions will come after public hearings.
