Jeremy Ludlow and park staff previewed the ice-fishing derby scheduled for the coming weekend and credited the United Sportsmen of Williston and the Blacktail Dam Association with organizing and staffing the event. Ludlow listed sponsors that include Enbridge, Scenic Sports, Shields of Minot, Nova Oilfield Services, Grundahl Recreation and Okay Distributing.
Organizers plan to provide activity kits to early-arriving youth: Ludlow said the plan calls for kits for the first 175 children (a bucket with minnows, an ice-fishing pole, jigs and a T-shirt). Staff also expect to provide lunch and snacks for more than 200 participants. The department is promoting the event through a press release and social media and has scheduled radio appearances to boost awareness.
On paddle fishing, Ludlow said staff (including Lindsey and Gabby) and community partners have convened meetings with the convention and visitors bureau, the sheriff's office, Game and Fish, the water board and community stakeholders to coordinate the event. He said the Northstar Caviar group has been a de facto leader in the past, and county staff are stepping in to assist with parking, traffic flow and day-of operations.
No formal board action was taken; staff will continue coordination and event promotion.
