The Williams County Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 7 approved a zone change request from Basin Electric to rezone approximately 239.92 acres in Wheelock Township from agricultural to heavy industrial for a planned generation facility.
Planning and Zoning recommended the change 8–0 before the commission hearing. County staff told the board the project proposes a two-on-one combined-cycle natural gas turbine configuration with associated equipment; the applicant’s project materials list a nominal output figure in the project overview attached to the application. The property would be accessed from 121st Avenue Northwest and the zone change was tied to a concurrent minor subdivision (lots to be known as MS 24-0059 and MS 24-0060). The subdivision recordation will be contingent on the zone change approval.
At the hearing commissioners asked only clarifying questions; one commissioner noted the township had met with Basin Electric and supported the project while suggesting the applicant might consult North Dakota DOT on turning lanes from Highway 2. The motion to change the zoning passed by roll call (motion moved and seconded; roll call yes).
