Commissioners sign annual noxious-weed eradication report, discuss adding eastern red cedar

Public works staff presented the Montgomery County annual noxious-weed eradication progress report and asked that commissioners sign the document required by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Commissioners approved the signatures unanimously.
During discussion, commissioners and staff discussed adding eastern red cedar to the county noxious-weed list. Public works staff noted the state has its own list but counties may declare species that are local problems to make landowners eligible for cost-share chemical treatment programs. Staff said that if the county adopts an additional species, it can make discount chemicals available to eligible landowners but that the county absorbs some storage and handling costs and that some chemistries (for example, Tordon for woody species) require licensing for purchase and certain handling. The board asked staff to investigate the full set of steps, costs and any required certifications and return with a recommendation.
A formal motion to sign the annual eradication report was made, seconded and passed with all commissioners voting yes.
