During the public-comment portion of the March 17 meeting, Gene (Jean) Dewey of Caney told the Board of County Commissioners he believed his property had been overvalued on the county’s tax rolls and requested a review.
Dewey said his assessed value had increased substantially and described earlier conversations with prior appraisal staff, noting he believed comparable properties had been treated differently. He asked, “how much power does the commission have in regard to the people like the appraiser and various offices? Do they all answer to the commission?”
Commissioners and staff answered that the county appraiser is a county employee who reports to the Board of County Commissioners. They invited Dewey to meet with the county appraiser, whom the board identified by first name as Melody, to compare numbers and supporting sales data. Commissioner comments indicated the board intends to have the appraiser review the file and, if necessary, meet with Dewey to resolve apparent discrepancies.
No formal vote was taken. Commissioners instructed staff to arrange follow-up with the county appraiser and to return to the board if the matter required formal appeal or additional action.
