Senators pressed Department of Administration staff on March 17 about the Division of Motor Vehicles’ Alvin system and a budget request for an additional full‑time position.
“To my recollection, the last update that we had, they had 87 just pending IT items,” Eric Demolen, Administrative Services Director, told the subcommittee when asked how the proposed position would help DMV. He said DMV has a long list of outstanding projects, and the additional staffer is intended to improve capacity and address the backlog so projects can be completed.
Senator Bjorkman described business partners and car dealerships experiencing slow system performance and asked how the new position would deliver higher speeds or better service. Demolen said he could not provide a detailed project list in the hearing but offered to work with DMV and its IT staff to produce a prioritized plan tying specific Alvin items to expected benefits for constituents.
DOA did not present a project‑by‑project timeline for Alvin at the hearing; Demolen said the director of DMV and DRB staff are developing enhancement work lists and that the committee would be provided additional information when available.
No vote or budget adoption occurred at the subcommittee session; members requested a more detailed project plan and prioritization showing which items relate directly to Alvin system performance.
