Council approves $136,479 change order for John Davis Recreation Center; completion date extended

The Dalton City Council approved change order No. 2 for the John Davis Recreation Center construction-manager-at-risk project to address field directives identified during renovation and to resolve unforeseen site conditions.
City staff said the change order covers corrective work on shear wall bracing in the administration building identified by the structural engineer after demolition, reconstruction of a pool-deck bench to address an elevation discrepancy on the south side of the pool deck, and added air conditioning for stairwells that were not included in the original design. The change order’s cost was presented as $136,479 and city staff said the project contingency will cover the work, so there will be no general fund impact.
Staff also told the council the contractor has requested an 81-day extension; the city approved moving the substantial completion date from August 31, 2025, to November 20, 2025. Staff said the extension primarily affects the gymnasium and other large portions of the project and that the pool and pool-access building remain on track to open by June 1. The change order was approved by the council.
Council members praised project progress during the discussion and the item was approved by voice vote.
