The Vermillion City Council on Monday awarded the demolition and site-grading contract for the former Jolley Elementary School to Walker Construction for a base bid plus alternate totaling $320,143.46.
City staff said the city acquired the property in late 2024 and previously completed asbestos abatement work. The demolition bid was split: a base bid for building and parking demolition and a bid alternate for grading the site for residential reuse. Staff noted the city will reimburse the contractor for landfill fees associated with disposing of asbestos-contaminated materials — an estimated $80,000–$100,000 expense outside of the bid subtotal — to ensure uniform disposal practices and limit contractor markup on landfill charges.
The city received 16 bids (one was rejected for missing signature); Walker Construction submitted the low combined bid. Staff recommended the award; the council approved the contract and the landfill‑fee reimbursement. Demolition was anticipated to begin in late March or early April, subject to post‑award items and contract execution.
