Planning commission approves one-year extension for Hope College site plan at East Eighth Street

The Holland City Planning Commission on March 11 approved a one-year extension to a previously authorized site plan for Hope College at 116 and 122 East Eighth Street to allow the applicant time for additional fundraising.

Steve, a city staff member, told the commission that the applicant’s site plan approval is scheduled to expire next month and that the city ordinance allows a one-year extension where building permits have not yet been issued. “They’re simply asking to extend that approval for another year,” Steve said, adding that staff recommended approval and that all original conditions would remain in effect.

Commission member Dave raised concerns about parking in the neighborhood. “The parking in the neighborhood has not improved. It is still difficult to find a place to park if you have friends coming for lunch,” Dave said. Steve said the conditions tied to the original approval — including a required parking study and an annual report — would continue under the extension and that the applicant would owe another report next fall.

The applicant, Cara, was not present. The commission conducted no public hearing on the extension because the action does not require one. A motion to approve the extension passed by voice vote; the record shows all members present voted in favor and no formal roll-call votes were recorded.

Staff later announced administrative items including that the April meeting date was moved earlier in the month for spring break scheduling and that Sofia has joined the department as a new department assistant.
