Supervisors authorize design and studies for Route 11, Route 37 and other transportation projects
Summary
The board approved staff authorization to proceed with partial design and studies including the Bruce Town–Hopewell Road alignment, Route 11 South widening value-engineering analysis, a new-location analysis for Route 37 and regional modeling for the comprehensive plan update.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors voted March 12 to authorize staff to proceed with a set of transportation studies forwarded by the Transportation Committee.
Supervisor motioned to approve studies recommended by the committee; the motion was seconded and passed by roll call with unanimous aye votes from Supervisor Jewell, Supervisor Blaine Dunn, Supervisor Wells, Vice Chair, Supervisor Lockridge, Supervisor Leggero and the chair.
The studies authorized include partial design and cost development for the Bruce Town–Hopewell Road alignment, a value-engineering analysis for Route 11 South widening, a new-location analysis for Route 37 and regional transportation modeling to support the county’s comprehensive plan update. Supervisors noted Route 37’s eastern segment may eventually function as a parkway and that the Route 37 work could be a long-term, phased project spanning decades as population grows.
Supervisor comments stressed workforce development and that route alternatives should be evaluated for cost effectiveness and long-range traffic relief. The board approved the expenditure of staff resources and any associated expenses through a roll-call vote to proceed.
Staff will return with cost estimates and next steps as the studies progress.
