Vice Chairwoman Callaway highlighted winners of the Legacy Business Project grants from District 2 and members observed a moment of silence for Luther Keith, founder of Arise Detroit.
Vice Chairwoman Callaway reported to the committee that the Legacy Business Project celebrated winners at the Detroit Historical Museum, awarding two $50,000 Legacy Business grants (one in District 1 and one in District 2) and several $15,000 awards citywide. She named the District 2 winners called out in the meeting: House of Morrison Shoe Repair (18933 Livernois), which Callaway said received a $50,000 grant; Chapman's Jewelry and Gifts (10535 West 7 Mile Road), which Callaway said received $15,000; and Mac Galleries, operated by James McKissick, which Callaway said received $15,000.
Callaway said the awards recognized long-standing small businesses, some operating for more than 30 years, and praised the program as a council-supported effort driven by the council president’s vision. Committee members noted the businesses’ longevity and local economic contributions, including apprenticeships and multi‑generation ownership.
Later in member reports, the committee observed a moment of silence for Luther Keith, founder of Arise Detroit, after members praised his community work and legacy in housing and outreach.
