Council honors women in construction, refers recognition resolution to committee

Detroit City Council on Tuesday presented the Spirit of Detroit award to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Detroit and introduced a resolution recognizing Women in Construction Week.
Council Member Fred Durhall introduced the resolution and praised local women who work in construction, citing growth in the industry attributed to NAWIC’s efforts. “Thanks to your efforts, the number of women in construction has grown by over 45% this last decade,” Durhall said on the chamber floor, adding figures he attributed to the organization: “making up 11.2% of the total construction workforce with 39% of those women in leadership roles.”
Director Thomas (city staff) accepted the recognition on behalf of the group and thanked council for highlighting the contributions of women builders and tradespeople. Council members described a week of events — a panel with Wayne State University, the Build Her Women’s Empowerment Conference at the Northwest Activity Center, a community walk and a “walk a mile in her boots” event along the Dequindre Cut — and mentioned a recent volunteer bed‑building project that produced 25 beds for kids in need.
The recognition resolution was introduced on the floor and, as the sponsor stated, will be referred to committee for formal approval.
