Detroit City Council voted to receive and file the annual report from the Youth and Civic Engagement Task Force after a morning presentation by Council Member Angela Whitfield Callaway and task‑force leaders.
Council Member Callaway said the task force was established in 2022 and that getting youth engaged in civic life strengthens democracy. “When our youth develop healthy civic habits, skills and commitment, our democracy will prosper,” she said before introducing task‑force spokesperson Dr. Chanel Hampton.
Dr. Chanel Hampton reported that the task force was reorganized in 2024 around four pillars — health, policy, financial literacy and exposure — and that the effort had signed up more than 70 organizations and schools to participate. She said the group had registered over 100 youth as new voters, hosted two financial‑literacy and empowerment programs, connected students to bank accounts and credit counseling, and linked young people to jobs and training opportunities. The task force also described a recent “bed build” that produced 25 beds for children in need and the group’s role as a lead agency in Grow Detroit Young Talent, which brings hundreds of youth into summer workplace placements.
After the presentation, a motion to receive and file the task‑force report was offered and, hearing no objections, approved by the council. Council members praised volunteer leaders and urged residents to attend upcoming task‑force events including panels, a women‑in‑construction summit and a community walk scheduled during Women in Construction Week.
