Gateway student representative reviews prom, musical, clubs and athletics

Braden Bongard, the student representative for Gateway High School’s Student Government Association, told the school board about upcoming and recent student events, including prom, the spring musical and several extracurricular achievements.
Bongard said the high school prom theme will be “Gilded Age Gala” and is scheduled for May 16 in the Carnegie Music Hall foyer. He also announced the spring musical, Once Upon a Mattress, which will run April 2–5 with six performances and a fundraiser sing‑along event on March 8 for families and younger children.
Bongard summarized recent and upcoming student achievements and activities: the Importance of Being Earnest was staged in January after a three‑year break for the high‑school play; three students — Diana Novak, Elena Ehlinger and Parker Abel — qualified for district chorus and two (Ehlinger and Novak) advanced to regional chorus; the wind ensemble worked with a visiting professor from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in advance of a concert; and a Black History summit field trip brought 20 students to presentations by experts from Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University and Community College of Allegheny County.
He described a cancer‑research workshop with representatives from the Hillman Cancer Research Center that included hands‑on lab activities and said 45 students will visit the Hillman center on March 5 to hear from principal investigators and clinical staff. He also described a student program called the Flowers of the Month club, in which students with special needs create monthly floral arrangements with support from Rosebud Floral in Murrysville.
On athletics, Bongard said the varsity wrestling team had three qualifiers for the WPIAL tournament and both Gateway unified bocce teams qualified for divisional playoffs; the bocce teams also participated in a Polar Plunge fundraiser and had raised nearly $2,000 as a team. He noted the bocce teams were one of only two schools in Allegheny County to have both teams qualify for playoffs.
Bongard closed by inviting board members and the community to the musical and other events and said students appreciate community support and facility access.
The presentation occurred during the board’s public portion of the meeting and was followed by board members’ brief questions about the musical and fundraiser.
