The Sweet Home police chief informed the Public and Traffic Safety Committee that a police services levy will appear on the May ballot at the same rate it has carried for the past five years. The chief said the levy helps fund the city’s police department and that without it the department's funding would be jeopardized.
Committee members discussed bicycle safety and were told the city's Transportation System Plan includes a section on enhancing bike safety and bike paths; staff encouraged committee members to review draft materials as candidates for grant funding. The chief noted that the police department runs an annual traffic-safety program for bicyclists that includes helmet distribution.
The committee asked that the department's monthly report (published with the council agenda packet) be added as a standing agenda item so members can review statistics and identify recurring issues. Staff agreed to include the report and to circulate planning-commission materials on the Transportation System Plan to the committee when they are finalized. Members also noted the radar speed trailer currently deployed near the junior high and thanked staff for arranging its use.
No formal committee action was taken on the levy during the meeting; the chief's announcement described a ballot placement and maintained the existing levy rate.
