At the Feb. 19 Park and Tree Committee meeting, a committee member reported on outreach to Mill City regarding a bridge project that the member said was part of a sizeable transportation grant package.
The committee member said the Mill City bridge was funded in part through a Federal TIGER grant administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation and estimated the total project cost at approximately $2,000,000 based on the grant share and the local match. The member said Mill City raised roughly $400,000 to provide the local match and that the DOT provided the larger share (the member described the grant as an 80% DOT contribution and a 20% local match).
Committee members emphasized that local fundraising and community support had been central to that project’s financing and said they intend to study the Mill City example to understand fundraising activities and approaches they could apply locally. The member said Mill City’s outreach and fundraising activities were primarily led by local community members and that committee staff will follow up with in-person visits to obtain more documentation.
Ending
The committee said it will continue researching grant prospects and how community fundraising contributed to the Mill City project, and that staff will pursue direct contacts in Mill City to collect supporting details for future grant applications.
