BRFW committee adds fire-code correlation to Sound Transit NFPA 130 petition, refers it to correlation committee

Ken Burlette (Seattle Fire Department) told the committee the edits were intended to keep the International Building Code language aligned with corresponding language in the International Fire Code and the state fire-code WACs where Mark Murray of Sound Transit had proposed changes to IBC Chapter 31/35 related to NFPA 130. “What happened is that Mark Murray, Sound Transit proposed the in the IBC… and it got approved through revision 1,” Burlette said, adding that the fire-code sections needed parallel updates so the building and fire codes would correlate.
Committee members agreed that the set of changes Ken submitted — shown in the meeting packet as updates to WAC 51‑54‑4900 — belonged attached to the original petition to make clear the IBC and IFC changes would be coordinated. A motion to add the WAC 51‑54‑4900 correlation item to the petition and to refer the combined package to the correlation committee passed by voice vote.
The committee noted two additional related tasks the full council previously ordered: (1) to create a correlation committee to reconcile code differences across IBC/IFC/WAC, and (2) to initiate a work group to examine economic impacts. The BRFW Committee’s action ties the fire-code edits to the Sound Transit IBC petition so the correlation committee can consider building and fire-code language together.
