Planning staff informed the Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission on Jan. 9 that the City has adopted a new administrative code for the preservation commission that codifies an annual training requirement: each commissioner must complete four hours of relevant training each year.
Suzanne Cahill, the Planning Director, said the training requirement is now in effect and that the department will circulate on-demand webinars and other opportunities to commissioners; participants will receive certificates that staff will record. Cahill and Historic Preservation Administrator Ethan Dickerman noted that trainings offered by the New York State Department of State and the National Park Service are often appropriate and can carry continuing-education credit for professionals when applicable.
Separately, Cahill said the City has opened an application process for the Community Preservation Fund Advisory Board, an advisory body that will recommend how to allocate fund proceeds (including a category for historic preservation). The transcript record did not include a clear, confirmed application deadline; Cahill said applicants should review the posted application and that she would share details with commissioners.
Commissioners were encouraged to take advantage of on-demand offerings and to notify staff if they plan to complete trainings so staff can record certificates. Cahill said staff will keep a spreadsheet of completed trainings and share opportunities as they arise.
