Planning Director Suzanne Cahill explained that the applicant proposes three awnings—one on the Wall Street face and two on the John Street side—and small logo signs (12.5 inches by 5 inches) on awnings to identify entrances. Because the property is in a historic district, staff must refer minor waiver requests to the commission for a recommendation. Cahill described the logos as small and “benign” and said the renderings show the awnings inset so they do not obscure important architectural features.
Commissioners discussed material durability and maintenance (one commissioner noted dark awnings can attract pigeon fouling), but found no objection to the proposed vinyl awnings, the use of up to three small logos on the front awning and the two awnings on the John Street side. A motion recommending staff approval of the minor waivers was moved and seconded and passed unanimously.
Staff will process the minor waiver administratively with the commission’s recommendation; the decision is not a certificate of appropriateness but an advisory referral for staff-level action.
